10th of September 1588:
Thomas Cavendish returns to England, becoming the third man to circumnavigate the globe. Cavendish was an English explorer and a privateer known as “The Navigator. His first trip and successful circumnavigation made him rich from captured Spanish gold, silk, and treasure from the Pacific and the Philippines. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth I of England after his return. He later set out for a second raiding and circumnavigation trip but was not as fortunate and died at sea at the age of 31.

Elias Howe patents the first practical sewing machine in the United States. Howe was an American engineer who apprenticed as a mechanic and machinist. He is best known for his creation of the modern lockstitch (single needle stitching) sewing machine.

10th of September 1912: Jules Vedrines, the French aviator, becomes the first pilot to break the 100 m.p.h. barrier winning the Gordon Bennett Trophy race.
10th of September 1977: Hamida Djandoubi, a Tunisian immigrant and convicted murderer became the last person to date executed by the guillotine. The guillotine is an instrument for inflicting capital punishment by decapitation that came into common use in France after 1792 (during the French Revolution). In 1789, a French physician first suggested that all criminals should be executed by a “machine that beheads painlessly.”

10th of September 2008:The Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator is the biggest scientific experiment in history, powered up in Geneva, Switzerland. The LHC consists of a 27-kilometer ring of superconducting magnets with a number of accelerating structures to boost the energy of the particles along the way. Accelerators were invented in the 1930s to provide energetic particles to investigate the structure of the atomic nucleus. Since then, they have been used to investigate many aspects of particle physics. Their job is to speed up and increase the energy of a beam of particles by generating electric fields that accelerate the particles, and magnetic fields that steer and focus them.
